We’re kicking off June by introducing you to one of the 2020 SCAPE companies, Timber Age. Meet the incredibly creative, kind, and market disrupting duo…

Q: What’s your name, title, business?

A: Kyle Hanson and Andy Hawk, Co-founders, Timber Age Systems Inc.

Q: What does your business do?

A: We deliver trusted, engineered building technologies such as Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) to rural communities

Our Mission: Elevate communities through innovative materials & methods which transform the way we design & build.

Q: Tell us about your entrepreneurial journey.

A:

Q: What was the most powerful lesson you’ve learned on this journey?

A: The most powerful lesson by far has been that a company may be dreamed up by one or two people but it is built and grown by a large cadre of advisors and community members who are invested in the success of the company. Timber Age is the recipient of a 2018 USDA Wood Innovation Grant. The grant allowed us to spend time with and interview nearly 200 individuals, it was those conversations that propelled Timber Age forward with a market-validated vision.

Q: Why did you apply for the SCAPE Program?

A: We see SCAPE as the voice for the entrepreneurial network in the Four-Corners region, one which has produced strong companies with proven track records. Timber Age is dedicated to working with and growing jobs in the rural communities of our region and we saw that echoed in SCAPE, it’s advisors and mentors. We also know that we do not have all the answers to the journey of starting a business and that SCAPE could provide us with mentorship and guidance from a group of people with vast experience. Timber Age is also in a position to grow and growth requires investment. Becoming a SCAPE supported company opens the door to potential investment opportunities that are fit for our company and our mission.

Q: What companies inspire you the most (local, national, worldwide)?

A:

  • Patagonia

  • Toyota

  • Barry-Wehmiller

  • Wood-Mizer

  • Ska Brewing

  • Anchor Industries, Inc.

  • Never Summer Industries

  • Yeti Cycles

Q: What do you love most about Southwest Colorado?

A: The dynamic community of self-starters, wanderers, preppers, hippies and homesteaders all claiming this stunningly beautiful place as home. From the deserts of the Navajo Nation to the San Juan peaks, the four corners region is unlike any other place, community and culture. It is this spirit of collective energy we daily harness in the growth of Timber Age.
